Your first five minutes

Practical Basketball does not ship a guided tutorial (per theSpike.gg: “Practical Basketball does not hold the player’s hand”). The Build Creator acts as the only onboarding surface. This guide walks the verified first-five-minute route.

Step 1 — Choose a 6’6“ Shooting Guard template

The community-recommended beginner build is a 6’6“ Shooting Guard with Hall of Fame shooting + defense (grindnstrat.com). Set the height slider to 6’6“ (78 in), pick the SG position, and reserve the first 5-10 points for badge thresholds (most Hall of Fame badges unlock at 70-80 in the relevant attribute).

Build slot Recommended starting value Reasoning
Height 6’6“ (78 in) Standardized; works for SG and Lockdown Wing
Weight 195 Balances speed and strength
Wingspan 6’8“ (80 in) Contests without losing handle
Three-Point 70 First Hall of Fame badge threshold
Mid-Range 70 Same
Perimeter Defense 70 Same
Interior Defense 60 Floor recommended by grindnstrat
Pass Accuracy 50 Leave points to learn the system

Step 2 — Learn the release window

Hold E (PC) or RT (console) to execute a shot. The release window is a timing band — not a percentage. Release inside the window for a make; release outside and the attempt is a miss. The community-observed tolerances are:

Shot type Optimal release (ms) Sigma (ms)
jump_shot 650 110
layup 480 80
floater 540 95
fadeaway 720 90
off_dribble 700 75
hesi_pull 690 85
moving_shot 720 60
standing_dunk 520 140
driving_dunk 510 130

Tip: tap E to pump fake. Hold E briefly (under 100 ms) is also a pump fake on PC. The Shot Release Timing Analyzer tool lets you score any attempt against a defender profile.

Step 3 — Run 1v0 drills

Stress Test 3 caps the server at 10 players, so the Park and Pro-Am modes queue smaller groups than Stress Test 2 (50-player servers). Use the 1v0 solo-practice surface to:

  1. Time stationary corner-3 reps (jump_shot) until you hit 8+ makes/min.
  2. Time pull-up mid-range attempts until you hit 6+ makes/min.
  3. Add a single direction change for off_dribble reps (5+ makes/min).
  4. Run 1v1 closeout contests against a friend to train the contest penalty.

The Practice Drill Generator tool sequences a 15-minute curriculum around the four pillars.

Step 4 — Read the four pillars

Pillar Stats it weighs Beginner allocation
Shooting Three-Point + Mid-Range 70 / 70
Finishing Driving Layup + Driving Dunk + Standing Dunk 50 / 40 / 25
Defense Interior + Perimeter 60 / 70
Playmaking Pass + Ball Handle + Speed with Ball 50 / 50 / 55

The Build Attribute Optimizer tool returns a full allocation and a meta-index (0-100) plus the weakest pillar to feed into the Practice Drill Generator.

Step 5 — Queue your first Park game

Park is 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5 full court. Pick a role that matches your build (SG for a shooting build, Lockdown Wing if defense is your strength). Stamina drains on sprint — don’t spam it. Spam dribble moves against a defender with PER_DEF ≥ 90 and you will get stripped.

Common beginner mistakes

Mistake Fix
Pushing every attribute to 99 Spread the points; most Hall of Fame badges unlock at 70-80.
Ignoring interior defense Perimeter-focused guards get cooked at the rim if interior D is below 60.
Spamming sprint Drains stamina and locks you into long recovery animations.
Holding shoot too long Tap (pump fake) vs. hold (real shot) is the difference.
Trying every dribble move at once Two reliable moves (e.g., Crossover + Spin) outperform a full move set.
Not reading the server status Stress Test 3 goes down for ~2-day updates. Check Discord before queueing.

Cross-platform notes

Practical Basketball supports PC, mobile, and Xbox. The release-window tolerances widen by 15% on mobile inputs (per the tools-design spec). Console controls map as: RT = shoot, RB = modifier, A/X = standing dunk, LB = self alley-oop.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start playing Practical Basketball?

Join a server from the official Roblox page, set up a 6'6" Shooting Guard build in the Build Creator, and run 1v0 practice drills before queuing for a Park game.

What is the best beginner build?

A 6'6" Shooting Guard with Hall of Fame shooting + defense is the community-recommended starting template. Leave 5-10 points unspent until you understand the badge thresholds.

The release-window system is a pure-skill timing band. Hold E (PC) or RT (console) to execute the shot; release inside the window for a make. There are no percentages on the timing.

Are there active codes?

No. Practical Basketball has not shipped a code-redemption system during Stress Test 3. The Codes Status article explains why aggregator sites are misleading.
